Mount Etna reminds the world of its presence and its power with an almost constant roar on the island of Sicily, sending hot lava fountains and ash plumes high in the air and along the slopes of the largest and most active volcano in Europe.

The frequent eruptions of Etna have been observed and feared for thousands of years. A particularly large one in the 17th century changed the shape of the Sicilian coast with a huge outpouring of lava.

The most recent outbursts tend to be smaller, but still dangerous enough to cause evacuations to nearby villages and stop air traffic with plumes of smoke and ash.
